August 2011

I was in Tel Aviv a couple of weeks ago for a few days of design research and a workshop with one of our client. We were staying near what the media called tent city on Sderot Rothschild Boulevard in the center of Tel Aviv.
The protests started when Daphni Leef (25), on July 14, 2011, established an encampment on Rothschild Boulevard and started a Facebook group to protest the high cost of housing and living expenses in Tel Aviv. This bold act rapidly gained momentum, media attention and began a public discourse across a variety of socio-economic and religious backgrounds. The protests rapidly spread to the rest of the country with over 300,000 people demonstrating in Tel Aviv on Saturday, August 6th.
